Professional Experience

My first job (if we’re discounting helping my brother with his weekly paper round for free) was working at the local leisure centre as a receptionist whilst at school. It was pretty awful…especially since I spent large parts of my shifts being shouted at for primarily trivial reasons. Some customers seemed to believe I had actively gone out my way to book up all the squash courts on a Monday night or had rigged their locker so that it swallowed their pound coin. Since then, thankfully, I’ve managed to avoid roles which entail dealing with unsatisfied members of the public on a daily basis:

  • Internship with Conville and Walsh Literary Agency: This involved providing editorial feedback on manuscripts, making decisions as to what should be rejected or accepted, corresponding with publishers, and attending book launches (complete with free food which went down a treat). Overall, given my love of reading and cocktail sausages, it was a very enjoyable few weeks.
  • Volunteer English Teacher with the Dodwell Trust: After graduating, I spent three months teaching English to children in a rural village in Madagascar, as well as writing and broadcasting radio programmes, and setting up football clubs. I also spent a large part of my time marvelling at the high levels of disorganisation, the complete lack of regard for volunteers’ personal safety and welfare, and the amount of corruption the Dodwell Trust possessed.
  • Copywriter/Editor at Fubra Limited: I started working part-time for Fubra whilst studying at university and continued working for the company after graduation for several months. The job involved researching, suggesting, and writing articles on topics ranging from electricity news (!) to ski resort guides. I also edited others’ work and spent a period of time deputising for the co-ordinating editor.
  • Digital Marketing Consultant at OMR: I now work as a digital marketing consultant at OMR, a company based in Leeds. I’m responsible for implementing and monitoring online marketing and online PR strategies and I really enjoy my job. I feel very fortunate to be working in an area which genuinely interests me and allows me to indulge my love of writing at the same time.
